The Bankomat ATM: Cash around the clock

What started out as a vision 30 years ago is now a reality for every Austrian and visitor to Austria: cash withdrawals 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout Austria. Since 1980, the Bankomat ATM network has developed into an essential service for cardholders and banks alike.

After analysing the Austrian market at the end of the 1970s, the banks decided to implement a standardised solution for cash dispensing machines. This enabled a solution, which stands out until today, even from an international viewpoint. The decision opened the door to a highly customer friendly solution for withdrawing cash in Austria using both domestic and foreign cards. New services have been developed since for Bankomat ATMs, such as loading values on prepaid mobile phones and loading Quick – the electronic purse.

These innovations have been turned into reality quickly and efficiently, sparking a revolution in cashless payments in Austria.

Gabe Geldausgabeautomaten Service GmbH, a predecessor company of PayLife, was founded in 1978. Its tasks included the planning, logistical preparation and commissioning of the ATM system followed by the equipping of eurocheque cards with ATM capability. The company was also responsible for processing cash withdrawals.

Eurocheque became Bankomat-compatible in 1983 when Austrian eurocheque cards were given ATM capability. The key innovation was to provide all eurocheque cardholders with access to a user-friendly and integrated system for cash withdrawals through the ATM network in Austria.

International cash withdrawals became possible as early as 1984. In 1985, Bankomat ATMs were joined by lobby ATMs – cash dispensers installed inside banks.

In 2001, the number of cash withdrawal transactions at Bankomat ATMs in Austria topped the 90 million mark.
